Kozhikode, October 30: Gokulam Kerala FC have signed Dennis Antwi Agyare, a Ghanaian forward, for the upcoming I-League season. The 27-year-old has experience in playing for top clubs in Malaysia, Sweden, and Norway.

Born in Accra, the capital of Ghana, the forward started to play at the age of 12 for Ajax Academy in his city. He later went on to play for Accra Hearts of Oak SC, a Ghanaian Premier League club.

In the year 2011, when he was 18 years old, he signed for the Malaysian Super League side, Kelantan FC. That was a breakthrough season for young Antwi, as he won the Malaysian Super League and Malaysian FA Cup with the club. In his debut season in Malaysia, he scored four goals in 10 appearances.

Later he was loaned to another Malaysian club, Perlis FA. In 2013, he returned to Ghana, where he played for International Allies FC. After a highly successful season in his home town, where he scored 10 goals in 12 appearances, he moved to Swedish Division Two club FC Rosengård 1917.

Antwi had yet another superb season at the Swedish club, where he started in 20 matches and scored 10 goals. His next stint was at FK Jerv, a Norwegian first division club. He scored 10 goals for them before moving to Norwegian top division team IK Start, where he started 29 matches and scored 14 goals.

He later moved to Norwegian club Asane and also returned back to Sweden to play for Trelleborgs FF, a second division club.

“I am delighted to join Gokulam Kerala FC. The club has a vision and is highly ambitious. Their vision is attractive. I also spoke with their new coach and understood what he wants.” Antwi said.

“My wish is to bring happiness to GKFC fans by winning the league. I am eagerly waiting to start training with my teammates in India,” he added.

“Antwi is a player who has got a champion mentality. He has got experience in playing in higher-level leagues in Sweden and Norway. He can play as a winger, center-forward, and also as a second striker. His main quality is his sprint pace and he is also very powerful. I believe he will find success at the club,” said Gokulam Kerala FC head coach Vincenzo Alberto Annese.

“Antwi would be an asset for us in the upcoming I League. We wanted a highly experienced player, and Antwi easily fits the bill. With such quality players, we are aiming at building a champion squad for the upcoming season,” said Gokulam Gopalan, the chairman of Gokulam Kerala FC.

Gokulam’s Rahul KP upbeat about upcoming season

Kozhikode, October 19:  Gokulam Kerala FC’s Rahul KP, a forward from Kasargod, has seen several ups and downs in his life. But whenever he faced a difficult situation, he found support in football and the sport has returned him bountifully.

The player, who rose from the academy setup of Gokulam Kerala FC, had humble beginnings and there were times when he travelled 10 kilometres on a bicycle to train alone. Despite the financial difficulties and adverse situations, he ambitiously embarked on his dreams.

Now GKFC have kept faith in its under-18 academy product as a new long-term contract has been agreed between the player and the club. “I am excited to sign the new contract. Last year was a memorable season for me. Our team played really well in all the tournaments it was a great learning curve for me. I want to achieve more with my club,” he said.

Rahul KP was promoted to the senior team from reserve team along with five other players last year. His debut was in the Durand Cup and the youngster made some cameo roles in the tournament, which Malabarians won.

He also had substitute roles in Sheikh Kamal International Cup and also made his first debut in ILeague against Mohun Bagan as a substitute. His dream start came against East Bengal and he had a stellar performance in the match with an assist.

“I am aiming to improve more. Last year training and playing along with the senior team, I was able to learn a lot. This year, it is a new coach. We have done only online sessions now but the whole squad has a lot of expectations this season. I want to help my team win ILeague,” he said.

Being a Malabarian from his academy days onward, Rahul has fond memories of the club. “The club has made commendable improvement all these years. If there were no club like Gokulam, I would have ended my career like any other player. The club has several raw talents in its academy and youth setups. I believe like me they will also get a chance,” he added.

GKFC head coach hopes to start the season on a high note

Kozhikode, October 14: Gokulam Kerala FC head coach Vincenzo Alberto Annese’s plan to start an early pre-season camp at Kozhikode has been hit by the Covid_19 pandemic situation here but the gaffer is confident that he would be able to prepare in the best way with available time.

The coach has been in constant touch with the players and along with fitness coach Djair Garcia, he is conducting daily online sessions for the players.

“Our plan was to start slowly. Now, it has been decided that the league will be held only in December. Right now I am giving space to the fitness coach to condition the players and prepare them for the camp. He is doing a good job,” said the coach.

The coach has also had personal conversations with each player and he says the morale of the players is good. “It was nice talking to each player. We are trying to make a connection and right now we know each other. These players have not played football for several months, and I see the eagerness in them to start the pre-season,” said the coach.

The coach has already drawn a Covid_19 special training program complying with FIFA and AIFF protocols. “We have to be really careful. I understand we have to be in quarantine when we reach there. We have already received the AIFF protocol and we will work accordingly. I am confident with the management and we are on the same wavelength about implementing Covid_19 protocol,” he said.

Having worked in several countries, the coach is keen to learn about Indian football and he has been watching I League qualifiers lately. “I am trying to watch most of the matches. It is more important to know about Indian players and football there,” he added.

GKFC senior team kick-starts pre-season training activities online

Kozhikode, October 8:  Gokulam Kerala FC kicked off its pre-season activities with online fitness sessions for its players ahead of the upcoming I-League. The daily sessions are conducted by GKFC’s Brazilian fitness coach Djair Miranda Garcia and overseen by Italian head coach Vincenzo Alberto Annese.

GKFC had earlier planned to start the training by October third week after two weeks of quarantine for the players from other states. But the club has postponed the decision in the wake of curfew (Section 144) imposed in Kozhikode up to October 31. The online sessions are aimed at improving the mental preparation and physical readiness of the players before the start of the pre-season camp 2020-21.

“We thought about starting the regular camps by next week but the situation does not permit it. So we have started online sessions to keep a tab on the fitness of the players,” said Garcia.

“I am assessing each player individually and also giving them instructions. I have spoken to the head coach and both of us have drawn plans for the online sessions,” he said.

Garcia said these sessions will help the players prepare for the preseason training camp mentally and physically. “Some of the players’ morale is a bit down because they have not kicked the ball for the last six months. These sessions will help them to come into the usual routine. Moreover, most of them have not done any group activities for long and it will help to lift their spirits,” he added.

GKFC head coach Vincenzo Alberto Annese believes that we need to adapt to the situations. “Though I am not a big fan of online sessions, we have no other solutions to the present scenario. I love to see the face of the players and train them. We need to keep a tab on their fitness. Our fitness coach has drawn a wonderful plan for the players. I wish I could be in Kozhikode and start the real training,” he said.

All the players signed for the senior team will be attending the camp pre-season camp and in the coming days, the prospective players from the reserve team will also be joined the sessions.
